Décor Ideas to Make Your Balcony Ready for Summer

As the weather begins to warm and the sun shines longer into the evening, we’re all eagerly anticipating the chance to spend more time outside. The fresh air, sunshine, beautiful skies and landscapes all make our days a little brighter.

If you’re living in a senior apartment that has a balcony, you have easy access to an outdoor space. You can turn it into a favorite space with some simple summer decorations that will bring life and beauty into your home.

Here are some balcony décor ideas:

Coordinate Your Colors

Whether you want your color scheme to be bright and festive, or calming and natural, you should make sure it complements the color and style of your indoor space. That doesn’t mean it has to match your overall home décor. You can make your outdoor space feel special and unique from the rest of your apartment by taking the style in a different direction, but just make sure that the transition from one space to the other is smooth and pleasing.

As you’re choosing your color scheme, decide what you want your outdoor space to be. Will it be a summertime party waiting to happen, or a calming and meditative oasis of relaxation and quiet reflection? Maybe you just want to add some cheery life to a small space with a punch of color from a bright pillow or two. Take all of this into consideration when choosing your balcony décor.

Comfortable Seating

Offering plenty of comfy seating is the most basic and important of balcony décor ideas. No matter how much space you have to work with, you want to make sure you have enough furniture for the number of people who can comfortably fit. Whether you go with classic outdoor iron chairs and side tables, the visual warmth of wood or casual wicker, use plenty of comfy cushions to ensure everyone can relax and enjoy the space in comfort.

Position your seating so that it faces the most pleasing views, rather than facing back at your door. And if you have room for a coffee table, that’s great, but if not, a small side table or two will do quite nicely. Just have a spot for people to put down a snack or a drink while they’re enjoying your summer decorations.

An Area Rug

A great way to add color and warmth to your outdoor space is to get yourself an area rug. No matter the size of the space you have, you’ll be able to find a weather-resistant piece to cover up concrete or splash some bright energy onto a warm wood floor.

You could even layer rugs and overlap them a bit to add a mix of patterns and materials that conveys a casual, confident style. Whichever way you decide to go, placing something comfortable to stand on is perfect for warm weather and bare feet.

Separate Your Outdoor Space

If you’d like your balcony to have a bit more privacy than it does, there are easy and inexpensive solutions to choose from. You can put up a privacy wall made of rattan. You can find a folding screen for a casual bit of separation. You could even simply hang a curtain to create a private space that’s all your own.

Especially if you have a small balcony to design, be sure to include your vertical space in your balcony décor ideas. If you have a wall, or put up a divider yourself, you can hang prints, fabrics or outdoor wall art to add character to every inch.

Bring Nature to You

No summer balcony would be complete without a generous display of plants and flowers. The beauty and life of nature is why we go outside in the first place! Pick up some plants that are appropriate for the weather in your area and the amount of sunlight they’ll receive. And give some thought to the extent to which you can care for them. A simple, small garden is the perfect summer hobby.

You can attach a planter to a guardrail if you have one, or get one that’s meant for the floor. This is especially enjoyable if you have a green thumb and want to be able to put some time into growing some herbs or vegetables. You’ll have a great time gardening right at home, and eventually enjoy the fruits of your labor with a delicious and bountiful harvest to use or give to grateful neighbors.

Hanging plants can add a forest-like feel, with stems that cascade down. Or, you could install some narrow shelving, even in a small space, and fill it top to bottom with potted plants to bring in color and life.

And don’t forget a bird feeder or two to cap off the beautiful Eden you’ve created. Ask an expert about which kinds of feeders and food are best for your area, and there’s no doubt the birds will find you.

Let There Be Light

One of the easiest yet most impactful balcony décor ideas is to hang some string lights. You could go festive and colorful, or stay with the calm feel of warm white. You’ll have plenty of sunshine to enjoy during the day, but in the evenings you’ll create a warm and inviting space where you’ll love to relax.

Another great idea for warm, inviting light is to use candles. You can set them up on tables, hang sconces from a wall, or any combination you can think of. Just keep safety in mind, and be aware of the rules of your senior apartment community.
